You Gotta SEE this!
Today is the last day for the Hilo Inter-Tribal Pow Wow in HILO Hawaii. You will be pleased. I went the first day and was amazed how many tribes are participating, yet how pleasantly small an event it was. The main event: bring your blanket, sit down and watch. I had been to the Waimea Pow Wow years ago and was impressed on how you felt attending…..this event gave me that and much more. I mean it is exciting in the way it was presented, the way you feel the spiritual vibes, the colorful tribal wear, the beautiful princesses, the friendship dance (get up and participate)…..or just watch and relax in our beautiful Wailoa park. This is also a great people-watching event and a great day in the park.
Today, will be special being Memorial Day. Take a chance – get out – enjoy our culture on the Hilo side of the island. You only live once!
This is an alcohol-free event – but plenty of Shave-Ice! Hurry up – the event starts in a few hours……go on – get!
Aloha

The Art Studio Tour was fun! Just too bad there were so many events in the community. Lower than expected numbers of visitors to our place.

Studen ArtWork
Pictured above are the 3 pieces of Student Artwork displayed at Hot Rocks Hawaii Studio. Everyone especially commented on the top right self drawing. Good job guys!

Hot Rocks Jewelry for Sale
One of 2 setups for the Art Studio Tour. My guests were impressed with the inside the home setup rather than the typical garage setup most of the art studios typically do. I will probably do a class early in the year…..guests were interested in a “hands-on” class where they will only be charged for supplies and I will let them do their own natural stone designs. If you are interested please email me your address and I will post in the new year. Aloha – Janet d

The St. Joseph Schools Country Fair was fun. There was something for everyone and especially for children. Cake walks, auctions, games, live music, food, Fire Trucks, Classic Cars, rock climbing, pony rides, Choo Train rides and of course our Astronomy Tent with Suburu, Imiloa, Gary’s Meteorites and my Geologic table. All good Fun! Kids and Adults alike loved the “dino dug”. We live in Hawaii and do not have fossils or a museum of natural history……so this is it…… for this kind of experience of learning. I had great discussions with kids and adults about why we don’t have fossils in the Hawaiian islands, how old are the Hawaiian islands, where did these fossils come from and how do you know these are dino poo? Great questions and conversations.
If you missed seeing my geologic table – we will be at the first Galileo Block Party in HILO. Saturday October 24, 2009 from 1:30 pm until 7pm. The whole street will be the Astronomy community plus my little ole table of dino dung and a Nantan Meteorite. FREE and definately a childrens event. Please join us. Aloha Janet D.

Year of Astronomy 2009 – Big Island of Hawaii – we have many events happening right now. October 3rd at St. Joseph’s High School, HILO TOWN - “meteor mama” will be located at the Astronomy Tent in the grassy field next to the Gym. I will have my geologic display that includes the Nantan, 3.5 lb Meteor sphere, Chunks of Dino Dung, Nautilus and Squid Fossils along with crystals, apache tears and other types of planetary stones. This is a FREE event. Great for Kids!
Also, on October 24th there will be a Galileo Block Party by the UH Astronomy Institute – the whole street will be about Astronomy. This is located on the street above the Imiloa Center for Astronomy in HILO TOWN. Again, I will be volunteering my time to display my geologic display and educational table for family and friends to experience. My table display is a “touch table” the kids can touch the display! See you there – Aloha Janet D

We visited the Caldera site before heading to the KMC event at Volcanoes National Park on Saturday. I was surprised to see that the Caldera has once again increased in the activity and sulfur output. The hole in the caldera floor is definately wider and larger……perhaps one day to be a full open pot of boiling lava again as in the old days? The Ranger told us that it just started showing an orange glow again at night. We will have to return to get photos of that.
At Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) inside the park both Dan and I volunteered our time to education. Dan (bigislandastronomy.com) brought his telescope for solar viewing outside and I was indoors with my “touch” display of Dino Dung, fossils and presenting a 3.5 Nantan, China Meteorite. It was not a tremendously busy event, but the tourist and locals who attended appreciated the personal time we gave to educate them on our displays. It was fun!
The question of the day: “how do you know that was really Dino Dung?”
My most memorable moment was a little girl (9 years old?) from the mainland on vacation with her family…..I am assuming she missed school to be in Hawaii……so she is taking back with her a slice of “Dino Dung”, some Apache tears (Obsidian) and a piece of Agate to share with her class about her experience to Hawaii. She was a very attentive listener and I hope she continues to be curious and takes this experience back to her school to inspire other children about out planet.
Big Mahalo - to Gary Fujihara of UH Hilo Outreach who pulled our Astronomy people together to volunteer at this event to help support KMC and do Outreach for our Community. Aloha Janet D.
