HAWAII NEWS Kalapana – Somewhat coolin it – for now!

We went to check out the end of the road at Kalapana – and it is apparent it is cooling down – to some degree.  Actually, the lava mounds are quite warm in temperature and can be dangerous to walk on at that.  (I won’t go into detail). You can’t see any red gurgling lava breakouts, only sulfur steam and cracks.  And way out on the coast (across private property) you can see that it currently flowing into the ocean by the look of the sulphur steam clouds going into the sky.  Now, I kinda wish I had gone out on one of those crazy nights (in July and early August) with hundreds of other people to see the lava busting out all over the highway…….but you know…….I don’t like seeing people loose property or homes…………so I got some cool pics of lava…… that may take up to 4 years to “really cool” down. Once again, my volcanic/geology interest has been satisfied, at least for now. Aloha

Events, HAWAII NEWS Hilo Inter-Tribal POW WOW – Gotta See

You Gotta SEE this!

Today is the last day for the Hilo Inter-Tribal Pow Wow in HILO Hawaii.  You will be pleased. I went the first day and was amazed how many tribes are participating, yet how pleasantly small an event it was.  The main event: bring your blanket, sit down and watch.  I had been to the Waimea Pow Wow years ago and was impressed on how you felt attending…..this event gave me that and much more.  I mean it is exciting in the way it was presented, the way you feel the spiritual vibes, the colorful tribal wear, the beautiful princesses, the friendship dance (get up and participate)…..or just watch and relax in our beautiful Wailoa park. This is also a great people-watching event and a great day in the park.

Today, will be special being Memorial Day. Take a chance – get out – enjoy our culture on the Hilo side of the island.  You only live once!

This is an alcohol-free event – but plenty of Shave-Ice!  Hurry up – the event starts in a few hours……go on – get!

Aloha

School ArtWork

Great News!

For a poor economy – we still pulled the “cat out of the bag”  at the Paradise Art Studio Tour 2009……….in all we raised a total of $1,036.00   The donation check was presented to the Pahoa Intermediate/High School on February 3rd by the PST.

This will help support art in the schools in our community.  As you can see from the artwork (above) displayed at Hot Rocks Hawaii Studio, we have some really great artist in the making!  Alot of people remarked (WOW) on the self-protrait – I think he only drew it in a manner of days!

Thank you for supporting this event and visiting my art studio – it was a fun event.

HAWAII NEWS Tsunami – HAWAII – Are we there yet?

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes – I am so glad to report that the surges came in rather than a tsunami disaster.

Whew- lucky – just lucky this year!

I understand due to the length of the wave trough (the short intervals of this event) we were given surges rather than crashing larger and larger ramped-up crashing waves. I am so happy it was Bambi that came to Hilo instead of Godzilla……..

HAWAII NEWS Tsunami Warning – Big Island !

Well, here we go – I hope that it is a very tiny wave as our island …..especially Hilo, has a history of tsunami disasters.  The worst part is that this is exactly the same as the 1960 wave that came from Chile…….if you live in Hilo you should have already evacuated Hilo town.  Don’t mess with this……it may be a wave only a foot tall at the Gallapogos islands but when it hits here it could be 10 times that size or more.

What is it like? Well, I just heard the 2nd set of Tsunami sirens going off at 7am, we can’t get gas for our vehicles because the line at the nearest gas station is 2 miles long……just have to sit this one out (wish I had filled up the car yesterday) .  Lucky I live up the hill in my subdivision – so I don’t have to evacuate but I worry for all the coastal peopel…….I still have my emergency bucket – that I have for Hurricanes, we have water, we have a veggie garden, can food in the pantry – looking good. Temporarily, this morning the cell lines were not working – but you could use the text messaging to talk to others (good thing I learned how to text last year).

Looking at the sunrise this morning,  you would not know that a potential disaster is about to happen, beautiful blue skies with white clouds. But, for me I am on high alert, called family here and on the mainland, friends who need to move boats etc.

Please be just a little tiny high tide…….give Hilo a break.

Big Island: Be safe out there, be prepared for Godzilla……and hope that only little Bambi walks in the door!

Aloha

HAWAII NEWS Obama – Lucky We Live Hawaii

Obama knows what we mean by “Lucky we live Hawaii” :

President Obama

President Obama

I live on the Big Island of Hawaii – I went to the beach on 1-1-10 – just gorgeous!  I sat and just watched everything from the Humpback Whales breaching near Hilo Bay and beyond the Horizon, watched the boogie boarders invade the surfer’s waves (and nearly get whacked), tourist enjoying our warm weather in the middle of winter, the splashing of the water on round river rocks (Honoli’i surf spot) and the soft sounds of tree and palm leaves  swaying in the wind coming out of the north today.

Lucky we live Hawaii. And to top it all off – I ate one my homemade “lava” brownies with extra, extra chocolate – this is the life! President Obama – he knows this is the life – the only thing missing from my perfect day was a Shave Ice!  Lucky we live Hawaii.   Aloha – Janet d

HAWAII NEWS Big Island Teen Tragedy & Survival

I just have to send out a get well soon- shout to a good family friend who is still recovering from the terrible accident that occured on October 29th in our old stompin grounds of Waimea.

These teens were hiking at Mamaewa Gulch in South Kohala when the hill gave way. The first teen fell 80-90 feet and the other fell about half that way and it may very well saved his life. The first teen did not make it – our condolences to his Ohana – the 2nd teen is still recovering from his ordeal.  He ended up with 3 cracked ribs, a punctured lung and ripped eyelid.  He is so lucky to be here.

He contacted us today and we are so happy to hear from him!  GET WELL SOON!

COOL Stuff, HAWAII NEWS Hawaiian Lava Update – NEWS

Halloween Nite: We hiked to see the activity at Kalapana on this spooky night – lit with the Full Moon.  The activity is not as spectacular as June 2009 or July 2008 when the lava activity shot high into the air about 100 ft.  This night it was still a sight to see – with the lava clearly seen streaming into the ocean, splashing up now and then – interacting with the saltwater – fresh hot orange lava. In the steam clouds you could see figures such as Pele’s face looking toward the lava streams, Warriors and I saw a grand ole Orange Pumpkin!

We missed seeing the activity a couple of weeks ago when the lava stream from up-slope came down close the trailhead and burned the Kipuka (Jungle patch) on the edges.  On our hike back to go home – a large pig was spotted looking for crispy grubs from the recent fire. We spot-lite her with our dive light and she just kept foraging – she must be used to Tourist! As for the crowd – well with tourism down right now – it was a small crowd – more rowdy. When we have the large crowds at the viewing site in the summer they tend to behave much better.    :)

Over night  NEWS – Halemaumau Caldera at Volcanoes National Park – had another collaspe of the walls of the pond! They are stating you can see more of the swirling lava pond from Jagger museum.  Is it possible this could continue to happen and end up being a full pond in a couple of years time? That would be something.  Stay tuned and support our local National park right here in our own back yard.  We might take a drive tonight to see how it looks……stayed tuned.  Aloha – Janet D
