August 2010:  KALAPANA LAVA ACTIVITY

From Hilo Town take Hwy 11 and follow to Hwy 130 to Pahoa.  Stay on Hwy 130 til the roads ends…….Kalapana does not exist since a lava flow buried it.  At the end of Hwy 130 you will see the warning signs about this area. With the current lava flow covering the old parking lots – it has been crazy.  You may be able to see a current flow over the existing road and at night some glows.  I have stayed away due to the lack of comfort and courtesy……people are trespassing over property and it is just nuts.  I will update you when they have an official system in place/Janet d.
