We went to check out the end of the road at Kalapana – and it is apparent it is cooling down – to some degree. Actually, the lava mounds are quite warm in temperature and can be dangerous to walk on at that. (I won’t go into detail). You can’t see any red gurgling lava breakouts, only sulfur steam and cracks. And way out on the coast (across private property) you can see that it currently flowing into the ocean by the look of the sulphur steam clouds going into the sky. Now, I kinda wish I had gone out on one of those crazy nights (in July and early August) with hundreds of other people to see the lava busting out all over the highway…….but you know…….I don’t like seeing people loose property or homes…………so I got some cool pics of lava…… that may take up to 4 years to “really cool” down. Once again, my volcanic/geology interest has been satisfied, at least for now. Aloha

I bet you can’t guess where one of my favorite places is right now? No, not the current crazy lava flow in Kalapana with a zillion people running all over private property……..it is our very own Federal National Park in the State of Hawaii. Volcanoes National Park in Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii – only 40 minutes from where I live. The minute you drive into the park you can feel the serenity and peace of the environment. On my “staycation” this year I chose to hike Kilauea Iki trail. Depending on your ability to walk and your stamina will depend on if you want to do this hike. I believe it is considered a moderate hike. (Make sure you get the brochure at the park ranger station – it tells you what you are looking at while you hike). You can either hike it from beginning to end for about an hour or so, or if you are strange like me, I like to do the part I was after…….. stay tuned.

For the first time in my life (and I have lived in the islands for over 25 years in total) I went to the bottom of a Caldera. I have been to the park many times over the years (from Age 5 to 40 something) but have never stopped and taken a moment to just enjoy one of the hikes and enjoy just being there……instead of the mad rush of trying to see a park….cause you have visitors and no time for everything. I went from the back end of the hike (across the street from the Lava tube trail) and went down the jungle side for about 45 minutes, enjoying the scene as we got closer to the bottom of the Caldera. If you do this early in the morning you also don’t run into anyone and the birds are singing away for just you. The hike back up was a good one and gets your breathing going……probably about 1 hour to go back up. But, we were distracted by a “Io” (Hawaiian Hawk) who was irritating an “Apapane” a rare bird except for the Volcano areas. I was thrilled! It was my first time seeing an Apapane……OMG. They were doing the full feather dance because they wanted that Io out of there. So in this one day, I not only made my wish list of being in a Caldera, the icing on the cake was the Apapane sighting! Wow, what a Birthday present that was for me!

So,Get out there and make your wishes come true. And, by the way, Support your Federal National Parks – they are yours. If you live on the Big Island it is only $25.00 for a card for access all year round. Hike, Camp and see the Stars at night……just do it! Aloha Janet D

You Gotta SEE this!

Today is the last day for the Hilo Inter-Tribal Pow Wow in HILO Hawaii. You will be pleased. I went the first day and was amazed how many tribes are participating, yet how pleasantly small an event it was. The main event: bring your blanket, sit down and watch. I had been to the Waimea Pow Wow years ago and was impressed on how you felt attending…..this event gave me that and much more. I mean it is exciting in the way it was presented, the way you feel the spiritual vibes, the colorful tribal wear, the beautiful princesses, the friendship dance (get up and participate)…..or just watch and relax in our beautiful Wailoa park. This is also a great people-watching event and a great day in the park.

Today, will be special being Memorial Day. Take a chance – get out – enjoy our culture on the Hilo side of the island. You only live once!

This is an alcohol-free event – but plenty of Shave-Ice! Hurry up – the event starts in a few hours……go on – get!

Aloha

Well, here we go – I hope that it is a very tiny wave as our island …..especially Hilo, has a history of tsunami disasters. The worst part is that this is exactly the same as the 1960 wave that came from Chile…….if you live in Hilo you should have already evacuated Hilo town. Don’t mess with this……it may be a wave only a foot tall at the Gallapogos islands but when it hits here it could be 10 times that size or more.

What is it like? Well, I just heard the 2nd set of Tsunami sirens going off at 7am, we can’t get gas for our vehicles because the line at the nearest gas station is 2 miles long……just have to sit this one out (wish I had filled up the car yesterday) . Lucky I live up the hill in my subdivision – so I don’t have to evacuate but I worry for all the coastal peopel…….I still have my emergency bucket – that I have for Hurricanes, we have water, we have a veggie garden, can food in the pantry – looking good. Temporarily, this morning the cell lines were not working – but you could use the text messaging to talk to others (good thing I learned how to text last year).

Looking at the sunrise this morning, you would not know that a potential disaster is about to happen, beautiful blue skies with white clouds. But, for me I am on high alert, called family here and on the mainland, friends who need to move boats etc.

Please be just a little tiny high tide…….give Hilo a break.

Big Island: Be safe out there, be prepared for Godzilla……and hope that only little Bambi walks in the door!

Aloha
